ABOUT YOUR STUDY

1.What is an in-center sleep study?

If you are having an in-center sleep study, you will stay overnight at the sleep facility. The sleep technologist will apply sensors to your head, chest and legs with tape and paste, to monitor your body while you sleep. There will also be a cannula and belts to measure your breathing; and a sensor placed on one finger to measure the oxygen in your blood.

Data is collected during the night that will help your doctor make a diagnosis and a treatment plan. An in-center study provides your doctor with the most complete evaluation of your sleep.

2.What is CPAP?

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. CPAP uses air pressure to hold the airway open.

3.What is a Split study?

If you show signs of having moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), then your sleep technologist may start you on CPAP treatment during the night of your diagnostic test. The technologist will explain how CPAP works and will fit you for a mask.

Even if the technologist does not use CPAP on the night of the study, you may still have OSA.

4.What is a titration?

If you are being referred for a titration study, you will return to the sleep center for PAP therapy. A titration measures your response to different levels of pressure. The goal is to find the pressure that keeps your airway open and treats the OSA. Therefore, the sensors that you wore during your initial sleep study, will be applied once again.

5.Should I arrive early?

Atlantic Sleep opens for testing at 8:30pm. If you arrive any earlier, there will not be staff on the premises to check you in.

6.What if I sleep during the day?

We offer day and night scheduling. If you typically sleep during the day, be sure to tell your scheduler to make or reschedule your appointment for 6:30am.

7.What do I need to prepare for my sleep study?

  • Try to sleep your usual amount and pattern, for the two nights leading up to your test.
  • Do not use lotions, oils, hair sprays or gels, since they may interfere with the recording.
  • If you wear a wig/toupee or have closely set braids, they will need to be removed for the study as our leads need to make direct contact with the scalp in specific locations
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol the day of your study.
  • Do not take any naps the day of your sleep study.
  • Eat dinner before your appointment.

8.Can I take my medication prior to the test?

Unless your physician instructs you to stop taking your medicine; continue to take it as prescribed. We want to observe your daily sleep pattern. If you need to take any medications or take any medical measurements (blood pressure, blood sugar) during the time that you will be here, you need to supply and administer them yourself.
We do not administer medication. Please talk with your healthcare provider, if you have specific questions about your medication.

9.Where do I park?

You may park directly in front of our facility. The parking lot is well lit.

10.Do I need to bring anything with me to my appointment?

Yes, please bring your driver's license or photo i.d., insurance cards, completed sleep questionnaire, a list of your current medications and two piece nightwear. Also, bring your prescription and referral, if applicable.
You will have a private restroom, so if you would like to bring your bathroom amenities, please feel free. We also offer secure wireless, if you would like to bring a laptop.

We want to provide you with a relaxing, homelike environment.

11.May I bring a snack or a drink with me?

Yes, you can bring a snack or a drink with you as long as it does not contain caffeine. We do have refrigeration if needed.

We also provide a coffee, tea, cereal or granola bars in the morning.

12.What if I need to cancel?

Your appointment reserves a bedroom specifically for you. If you need to reschedule or cancel, please contact us at (609) 748-7900 at least 24 hours prior to your test.

13.What if I think I will be late for my appointment?

If you think you will be delayed for any reason, please tell your scheduler

14.What if I smoke?

If you wish to smoke, the technician can direct you to an outdoor smoking area prior to hook up and after you have been unhooked from the equipment.

15.What if I use Oxygen, CPAP, Bilevel or other breathing machine?

If you use oxygen, be sure to bring a portable supply for your trip to the sleep center and for your ride home. We have oxygen machines in the sleep center, and a technician will connect you to an oxygen concentrator while you are here.

You do not need to bring your CPAP, Bilevel or AutoSV machine with you to the test. Our in-center PAP equipment is used for titration purposes. Depending on the procedure ordered by your physician, you may not be hooked up to the machine right away or at all.

If you are comfortable with your CPAP mask and headgear, you may bring it with you for the test. We do have an array of several different mask types that you can be fitted with, if necessary.

16.What if I can't sleep?

We are familiar with this worry and do not expect your sleep to be exactly like it is at home. We make every effort to ensure the environment is as comfortable as possible for you.

17.Can my family member or friend come with me?

You may have a friend or family member come with you to the sleep center, but they must leave before the start of the test. If you have specific needs or require a translator, arrangements can be made in advance.

18.When will the test be over?

The technologist will awaken you between 5:00 and 5:30am. At that time, the sleep technologist will begin unhooking you from the sensors. They will also ask you to complete a questionnaire, asking how you think you slept and about your overall experience.
